Cinematic HDR is becoming a reality, bringing significant improvements in brightness, contrast, and color gamut. As multiple companies introduce their own approaches to HDR, the industry faces a growing challenge of content versioning. Different HDR implementations will inevitably require separate deliverables, adding complexity to post-production and distribution.

In this session, we present a technical collaboration between Colorfront and Barco, focused on managing this versioning challenge efficiently. We will outline a practical workflow that simplifies HDR mastering and conversion, ensuring high-quality results across different projection systems. Our findings suggest that, rather than adding complexity, HDR could streamline workflows for cinema, showcasing Barco’s recently released HDR Lightsteering projector with its potential of high dynamic range for theatrical presentation.
